The unveiling of a much-anticipated historic marker at the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club attracted city officials, members from local General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Coral Gables Historic Preservation Association representatives and others.
Raising funds for this project was spearheaded over the past few years by club member Robin Burr.
After the unveiling ceremony officiated by Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason, the crowd also heard from Arva Moore Parks McCabe, former Gables Mayor Dorothy Thomson, Robin Burr and club president Deborah Van Stone Moore who thanked everyone for attending.
Guests enjoyed a lovely cocktail reception during which time they were able to tour the club’s free children’s dental clinic that is attached to their clubhouse. Members proudly showed off the clinic and a beautiful new dental chair they were able to install thanks to an $8,000 grant made last year from the Coral Gables Community Foundation.
Among those enjoying the event were Coral Gables Commissioner Jeannett Slesnick, city manager Cathy Swanson, Coral Gables Community Foundation executive director Mary Snow, Gulliver’s dean of faculty Hank Langston, Daneza Socarras, Robert Beans, as well as CGWC past presidents Barbara Lapsley and Linda Hartwell.
Also attending were Karelia Carbonell from Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables, several member for other GFWC clubs such as Cocoplum, club members Carmen Suarez, Ruth Martinez with husband Sam, Chiara Migani, Arely Ruiz, Kate Swain, and Jessie Francisco.
In other news, on Aug. 14, a dozen or so future Florida Gators gathered at Coral Gables Museum with friends, family and Gator alumni for the presentation of this year’s UF Alumni Scholarship Awards Luncheon at Coral Gables Museum.
This year the Miami Gator Club gave out about $12,000 in scholarships, ranging form $500 to $2,500, to South Florida students who will be attending the University of Florida.
Miami Gator Club president Natasha Schoutz welcomed the guests and introduced Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce president Mark Trowbridge, past president of the Miami and the National University of Florida Alumni Association. After a short and very entertaining talk, Trowbridge called up each scholarship winner to accept a certificate and pose for a photo after answering a few questions.
Among the recipients was Coral Gables High School Class of 2016’s Sophie Feinberg who received a $1,000 award and also was a recipient of one of Coral Gables Rotary’s scholarships ponsored by Rotarian Yolanda Woodbridge.
Speaking of Rotary, Coral Gables Rotarians will hold a fundraiser on Monday, Sept. 12, at the new Carolina Ale House on Bird Road and SW 67th Avenue, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $10 which includes one drink and shared appetizers compliments of Weston Rotarian and restaurant owner Joe Marouf.
Congratulations go out to Coral Gables Hospital on a special year in its history. On the evening of Aug. 19, dignitaries and guests packed the beautiful Coral Gables Museum for the hospital’s 90th anniversary celebration.
